Visiting Laos is more than just a mere holiday, it’s a unique experience.

Although a million miles away from the shopping meccas of Bangkok and Hong Kong, there are some internationally acclaimed products available in Laos that make perfect souvenirs to buy in Laos for yourself, family or friends.

You may need to look hard for some of the souvenirs detailed below, but if you’re lucky, your tour operator will be able to point you to precisely the right direction, who knows, they may even haggle on your behalf!

Buying things in Laos is a low energy interaction compared to some of the haggling competitions you can get into in neighbouring Vietnam.

They will generally give you a slightly higher price that allows for a bit of gentle haggling but not of the full-blown variety seen in many of the neighbouring countries!

If you are on one of the Exotic Voyages escorted tours to Laos, your local representative should be able to give you some idea of the real cost.

However, it’s worth bearing in mind that you are haggling for relatively tiny amounts, so don’t put too much gusto into it!

What are the things worth taking home from Laos? Please see below for a few of the items that are made in Laos and make great gifts.

3 Laos Souvenirs You Should Bring Home

The items listed below, although termed as souvenirs can be bought on their own merit, rather than as a simple memento.

In most cases the quality is good, and there are some things you can actually wear or drink as well as an ornament or a point of interest for visitors to your home.

1. Traditional Lao Wraparound Skirt

This style of skirt is worn by the majority of the female population in Laos and is of very smart appearance considering its simplicity.

The main problem you will have when selecting one of these skirts is trying to pick from an absolute plethora of colours and patterns.

These are great for formal events wherever you may live and will certainly spike the interest from others as to its origins.

2. Wood Carvings

These intricate carvings are main crafts in many villages throughout Laos and the attention to detail is almost unbelievable.

If you are buying one of these handcrafted carvings be sure to take it in your hand luggage to negate the risk of damage.

3. Snake Whisky

Whatever your thoughts on this Asian oddity, it can’t be disputed that it would make a unique souvenir. What the customs officer may say as you check back into your home country with a snake in a bottle of whisky is unclear.

So, there you have it, just three of the many things you can buy in Laos that make great gifts.

One other notable souvenir, providing you visit the Bolaven Plateau, is the famous Laos Coffee, said by many to be the best in the world.

Be sure to check local laws and customs if you are buying any items that could be deemed as antique or illegal, otherwise have a good trip and enjoy shopping in Laos.

I would love to bring home the skirt and the wood carvings but would not refer the snake whisky, it sounds and looks too scary. I love the skirt, looks sooo feminine and classy as well.

I would love to have the wrap around skirt. It is so colorful and pretty! That would really make a perfect souvenir. The snake whiskey made my skin crawl. OMG, as scared as I am of reptiles, I would not even touch that bottle. I know they believe it is for “medicinal purposes.” but I would rather swallow a lot of pills than to drink that.

    8. pooja Malkani says

Never heard of snake whiskey! this is so strange that people can actually enjoy such a drink. Love the shirt! would be a great addition to my wardrobe. If I ever plan to visit there, I will get one

      • Dalene Ekirapa says

Snake whiskey is famous for its healing properties. Sounds scary but would be worth my shot if in Laos. Haha. Anyway, the Laos textiles are on point! Get them someday!

    9. Crickette, The Things I Have to Say says

I would definitely take home a nice wraparound skirt. And maybe a bottle of the snake whiskey to give to my boyfriend and his friends. I’ve taken a shot of snake whiskey before, but I had it locally, here in the Philippines. It gave off a characteristic heat, but I think the taste is the same.

    10. Todd Smidt says

I had snake whiskey when I was in Thailand. It’s crazy that they make it. How long were you in Laos? How much do the wooden carvings usually cost? Wood carvings and art work are my favorite things to bring back from a trip!

      • Dalene Ekirapa says

It’s nice that you’ve had snake whiskey! Anyway, Luang Prabang is famous for its carvings ranging from $25-$5,000 depending on its quality and design. Those are must haves!

    11. Melanie williams says

Wow so many lovely and beautiful choices here. I always love the look of the wooden carvings for sure xx
